Saying 'I'm sorry' is the same as saying 'I apologize.'

Except at a funeral.

week skill 12 of 53: comedy (to connect faster with strangers)

jokes read: 521.

jokes that were actually funny: 9.

here's how the week went + invite to a special event online today (at the bottom)!

monday I studied the science. there's an actual formula for humor called benign violation theory. something is funny when it breaks an expectation but feels safe.

tuesday I realized the formula is about 20% of what makes people laugh.

the other 80% is timing, confidence, clarity.

wednesday I tested jokes on strangers. results: mixed.

thursday I tried writing original material. turns out writing jokes is harder than every other skill I've attempted this year. including learning Bulgarian. and 7 hours of silence.

friday I read another 200 jokes online hoping to find hidden gems. I did not find hidden gems. I found the same spam…

saturday I put together a 30-minute show from my notes

and tonight... I perform it!

the one actually useful thing from this week

making someone laugh in the first 30 seconds of meeting them is the most underrated skill in business and life.

one laugh and the guard comes down.

trust gets built in seconds instead of hours because the conversation shifts from "who is this person" to "I like this person."

funny people are better people.

All you need is to learn 5 jokes and deliver them well.

Sooooooo
